Hope this finds you well.
My question is about musical vs play structure. I (songwriter) was talking with a playwright the other day who said "musicals are just plays with songs in them". She has been in Theatre a lot longer than I have and although that statement didn't quite ring true .... I found I had no vocabulary to articulate my notion on differences. I guess in a certain sense musicals are plays with songs in them. But from another perspective it seems there are sensibilities to a musical, on many levels, that are unique to them .... and go beyond merely inserting songs that move the story, reveal character and then adding a couple of bars of instrumental intro.
So thought to send this question to one who is light years down the Path from where I am.
